Via Lavinia
Mixed media scene in Chiusi old town looking down Via Lavinia. Chiusi is a pretty, Tuscan hilltop town. It’s well worth a visit, particularly for its rich history and archeology. I chose to paint this view for the ancient arch just visible and embracing the vanishing point. It’s an unusual composition where the road, while dominating the central area, has a status like sky does in a painting: filling the space yet setting the atmosphere. Balance is achieved with detail either side, and a dramatic foreground, drawing the viewer’s eye to the centre, to that beautiful arch, which is actually the last remaining gateway of the ancient city wall, known as Porta Lavinia (formerly Porta ala Vigna). The two images here are taken with different lighting and show up the collage papers in different ways.
Thanks to @easelandlens for the wonderful retreat!

The buildings are made up of the yellow/pink ‘play’ painting I made; the tile patterns used in the paving; the map (of the same region!) makes the arch and text was used in the sky. I did go over much of it so it became very subtle but the thickness of the papers also brings texture.
